The Legal team of the All Progressives Congress Candidate, Barr. Adejare Bello on May 27, 2019 called three witnesses in the ongoing case against the election of Barr. Bamidele Salam at the Election Petition Tribunal.
Several confusion, drama and attempts to fool the Tribunal occurred. From disparities in the signature of witnesses to conflict in the information that the witnesses provided, it was clear that the Bello team were unprepared.
An eyewitness stated that “one witness for Bello came to court to adopt a witness statement from Egbedore for Ede North. Another witness said he was shaking fearfully because of the crowd in court and that’s why his signature was world apart from the signature on his witness statement when he was asked to give specimen of his signature.”
The major drama of the process of cross-examination of witnesses occurred when the APC presented a witness that attempted to fool the Tribunal.
This witness, the third witness of the day appeared before the Tribunal and interestingly, ‘her’ Statement on Oath contained that the witness is ‘Male’, whereas the witness presented was female. This witness said she knew nothing about how she, Female, became Male, in the witness statement.
This was objected to by the combined Legal teams of Salam, the PDP and the 3rd Respondent, INEC.
After prolonged arguments, the Judge gave a ruling that clearly stated that the third witness, a female, came to testify to an oath prepared by a male.
In a clear attempt to save face and prevent further embarrassment, the Legal team of Bello and the APC brought the calling of their witnesses to an abrupt end after the third witness, instead of the eight they earlier expressed intention to call.
Bello’s legal team moved a motion for adjournment and the Court consequently adjourned to the 11th day of June.
